PDO "Melnik", Amendment of the Act of approval № RD 18-1/15.01.2021 and specification of wine with PDO "Melnik"

With reference to an application submitted by the Regional Vine and Wine Chamber (RLWC) "Pirin" for amendment of the specification of the wine with PDO "Melnik" respectively to the Act of GKNP "Melnik" a preliminary national procedure was conducted according to art. 96 of Regulation (EU) № 1308/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

In the unofficial section of the State Gazette issue 24 (form March 23, 2021) was promulgated Act № RD 18-1 / 15.01.2021 of the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, which confirms a change in the Act for approval № RD 18-48/04.07.2005 of wine with protected designation of origin (PDO) with traditional designation Garantirano i kontrolirano naimenowanie za proizhod – GKNP (Guaranteed and controlled designation of origin) "Melnik".

Challenges and Opportunities in the Greek-Bulgarian Cross-Border Region Related to Local Biodiversity and Vine Varieties

The „SOS for endangered traditional vine varieties“ deals mainly with common challenges and problems in the Greek - Bulgarian Cross-border Region (Fig. 1) related to local biodiversity and vine varieties, especially those in the sites of "Natura 2000". Leading beneficiary is the Executive Agency for Vine and Wine. Its partners are: Association "Prosperity and Development in Bulgaria", Business & Exhibition Researches and Development Institute (IEE)), Greece, and the International Hellenic University, Thessaloniki.
Within the frames of the project "SOS for endangered traditional vine varieties“, various activities were implemented, and the effect of conventional, organic and biodynamic systems for the production of traditional vine varieties was evaluated. Experimental fields were created in the area of the Greek-Bulgarian cross-border region, which showed a different approach to determining the most appropriate system of agriculture at both national and local level.
A unique DNA study of local vine varieties from Bulgaria and Greece was performed. The study achieved its goal of assessing the genetic diversity of eight Greek and nine Bulgarian native vine varieties using seven microsatellite markers.

Endangered vine varieties and sustainable agriculture

The main objective of the project “SOS for endangered traditional vine varieties” is to promote and enable the long-term protection of vineyards, especially those in “Natura 2000”, and also to improve the conservation status of local vine varieties; to analyze local species through joint scientific work and to create mechanisms for protection and conservation of species in general that can be used for other species and regions.

Trainings on European and world vine conservation practices are being completed

On 16.10.2019 was the last day of trainings on the topic "Implementation of European Union good practices" in the new training centre of the Prosperity and Development for Bulgaria Association, Blagoevgrad. A joint Bulgarian-Greek group of experts in the wine industry, administration and media have worked together on problems with endangered local vine varieties and global conservation approaches. The role of professionals and local administrations in delivering results in this area from around the world was shared. The trainings were held in the new high-tech training centre of the Prosperity and Development in Bulgaria Association in Blagoevgrad

The first free trainings on European and World vine practices were held, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria

Free trainings on "Implementing European Union Good Practices" were held from October 1st to 3rd at the specially created Training Center under the project in Blagoevgrad.The investment is under the VINESOS project for endangered traditional vine varieties under the Interreg V-A program "Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020" and includes modern furniture and multimedia equipment in three premises, which will provide interactive lectures and their broadcast in real time on the Internet.
